Native American Arts & Crafts and Music & Dance

An assembly performance
1). Showcase Native American Music and Dances for students, staff, and
community.
2). Time- 45 min, to 1 hr.

Connection with Mother Earth.
1). Schedule groups of students by age or grade throughout the day (Sufficient time
given for each group is 1 Hr. to 1hr. and 30 min.)
2). Teach students about where we come from with stories of our homeland and
surrounding areas. Talk about landforms and what they mean to us socially,
sustainable and ceremonially. Using gems and stones of the earth for our healing
spiritual and teaching of the four directions.
3). Activity- then we do beading with students to keep (Bracelets, necklace and
choker.) They will keep for the last day to wear for some social dance. (Materials
in this activity is provided by us.)
4). Time: 1 hour.

Survival, our way of life
Girls
1). Rugs of our grandmother will be showcased to students to see.
2). Students will learn why we did weaving and how it help sustain Navajo lifestyle.
3). Activity- Students will be given mini-weaving packs for them to start their own
weaving. This activity will take longer to finish but students can continue in class
or home. (Finished products should be showcased in hallway or centers where
community can see students work.)
4). Note: School provides plastic or metal big needles and different colored yarn for
weaving. (We provide the rest.)
5). Time: 1hr. 30 min.
Boys
1). Four type of bow will be displayed for students to see.
2). Students will learn why we did Hunting and how it help sustain Navajo lifestyle
3). Activity- Students will be given bow shape stick and string to start their bow. This
activity will take longer to finish but students can continue in class or home.
(Finished products should be showcased in hallway or centers where community
can see students work.)
4). Note: we will provide stick and string.
5). Time: 1 hr. 30 min.

Hogan our traditional home
1). Show some picture and models of our traditional homes here in the southwest for
students to see.
2). Activity- Students will work in small groups or teams and create a small model of a
Navajo Hogan.
3). Note: School can help provide hot glue guns and a 5-gallon bucket of sand for the
day. Young grades can have a simpler model Hogan with cardboard. Will need
sand and regular glue.
4). Time: Young grade have 1 hr. Older grade 1 hr. 30 min.

Catching your Dreams- Dreams Catchers.
1). Finish dream catcher will be shown to students to see the may different styles.
2). Activity- Students will make their own dream catcher to make. Finished projects can
be displayed in places for community and family to see.
3). Note: we will provide stick and string.
4). Time: 1 hour.
