The Students at desert Star School are learning the ways of the Dine’ people, from making the loom, the Rug, and all the preparation need to complete the rugs. The cultural teachers try to define all aspect of the making a Navajo Rug.

Students learn that Mother Earth have many healing powers. Each student sit quietly as they see A. Brent Chase create designs out of different colored sand and hear the teaching of the Navajo Sand Painting is explained. Students realize the Navajo find healing and balance from the simple sands. After a while students are invited to add their own mark of sand to complete the sand painting.

Mini Hogan is more involved but when completed the students are very proud of their accomplishments. Student will learn about the traditional home of the Navajo, they will study intently of the different Hogan exist in the tribe. Students learn the ceremonial, social and family life the Hogan plays in the tribe.

Bow & Arrow making are usually for the young male students. After a lesson in how the bows and arrows play a role in the Native American culture. The activity following is making a bow and arrow. Students are allowed to paint their bow and arrows and decorate them with feathers of their choice.

Jewelry or beading is always fun for all ages. Lessons of important stones and significance are taught to students. Students will make an item to wear to keep. This is to encourage young Native American students to carry on Cultural arts and crafts.
